In Rawlins, the public works department was gearing up Tuesday for yet another round of heavy snow on city streets.
Carbon County has experienced higher than average snowfalls this season. Today’s blizzard is putting added pressure on the city’s snow removal crews. Rawlins Public Information Officer Mira Miller said the city is as prepared as possible.
As of last night, the National Weather Service is calling for up to 12 inches of snow in Rawlins. Miller said the city is focused on keeping the main roads open but will work on side roads if the snow gets too high.
The city received quite a bit of snow last month. If this blizzard is worse than the one from January, the city will enact its snow emergency route plan. Miller said people should avoid parking in marked locations.
As reported by Bigfoot 99 this month, Rawlins Public Works Director Cody Dill said he was running out of places to store the snow. Miller said the city has room for the precipitation from this storm. If more snow falls than expected, Miller said alternative locations are available.
The snow isn’t the only danger from today’s storm. Cold temperatures are also in the forecast. Miller said to do whatever you can to prevent your pipes from freezing.
Miller said city crews are ready to start clearing the roads as soon as possible. While snow removal is happening, Miller said to stay away from the plows.
Even after the snow tapers off, drifts will continue to be a challenge for the city street crews.
