According to the Wyoming Game and Fish Department, an unidentified man was mauled by a grizzly bear Monday afternoon while hiking Francs Peak west of Meeteetse.

The man, reported to be an experienced out-of-state back-country recreationist, was flown by helicopter to a hospital in Billings, Montana where he is receiving treatment.

According to the initial investigation, the chance encounter occurred at high elevation. The Francs Peak Trail reaches altitudes of more than 13,000 feet. Investigators with Wyoming Game and Fish and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said the hiker had bear spray but did not have time to deploy it in the surprise encounter.

No management action is planned. WGFD will continue to monitor bear activity in the area and will make management decisions in the interest of public safety, the agency said.
