Saratoga Councilman Jon Nelson went before the county commissioners Tuesday to express his concerns about how the town keeps its books.

Nelson charged the town with using as much as $1.2 million from enterprise accounts to cover ongoing deficits. Nelson argues the enterprise accounts are restricted for use to operate and maintain specific utilities or other services. The town, without notification or a vote, has reclassified the money for general fund use.

The Carbon County Commissioners are drafting a letter to the Town of Saratoga and Saratoga-Carbon County Impact Joint Powers Board supporting the idea that water and sewer funds may only be used for those services. The commissioners will also request past borrowing of water and sewer funds be repaid to the Joint Powers Board. Emma Diercks reports.
