A truce has been called in the quiet turf war that has waged for the last several months between the city and the county.

In April, the sheriff’s office announced that it wanted to increase the $60 per day fee it charges local communities for housing inmates at the county jail to $100.

In July, in what seemed like a response to the $40 per day increase, the City of Rawlins attempted to amend its code to remove jail time as a penalty for 13 offenses in the municipal code, including DUI.

The county attorney’s office reacted, stating it would no longer prosecute misdemeanor charges brought by city police. At the same time, the sheriff’s office stopped accepting city prisoners at the jail.

The drama played largely out of public view while a joint advisory board worked out a friendly resolution. Bigfoot 99’s Cali O’Hare has followed the story and has the latest update.
