The Saratoga Town Council this week again rejected an invitation to join the Carbon County Economic Development Corporation. Saratoga is the only community in the county which is not a sponsor. At a recent meeting council members told CCEDC Director Yvonne Johnson that they had not seen any return from their past investments, which were in the neighborhood of $5,000 a year.

That was Councilman Jon Nelson at the August 23rd meeting of the town council.

Johnson said she was familiar with the complaint from other communities. She acknowledged that in the past under different leadership the organization had been married to big wind developers at the expense of small businesses. Johnson said she is working to change the focus of the CCEDC. This week, the council considered an invitation to become a $500 sponsor at the organization’s Silver level. After a brief discussion where the council appeared unconvinced, Mayor Creed James declared the issue dead.

The council did approve sending Town Clerk Marie Christen to a leadership training program that is sponsored by the Carbon County Economic Development Corporation. The program runs from January to July and costs $350. The popular program has been around for several years now and is designed to familiarize participants with county and state issues, as well as the inner workings of the infrastructure and organizations critical to the area.
