Rawlins PD introduces 911 texting

Sometimes in an emergency, talking to a 911 operator is not an option. In some life or death situations, talking might give your location away to someone intent on harming you. Maybe you physically can’t talk because of a medical reason.

To better respond to those kinds of situations, the Rawlins Police Department is now accepting Text-to-911 across Carbon County.

Use the text app on your phone. Type “911” in the “To” field on your message screen.

Your first message should be brief. Use simple words, not abbreviations. For instance, describe the type of emergency and the location. Officials caution that the text version of 911 is not yet as robust as the voice version.

For instance, voice 911 is not available if you’re roaming. The technology that allows for rapid geographical mapping of 911 voice calls may not be as accurate for the text version. Response times might be slower as a result. Still, the text version of 911 could be a lifesaving tool in an emergency.

The Rawlins Police Department activated the service for Verizon Wireless, Union Wireless and Sprint users in the county on August 9th. Officials say it will be available to T-Mobile and AT&T customers in the near future.
