A man and woman from New Mexico are being held in Carbon County jail on felony drug charges after a chase on Interstate 80 that ended on a ranch near the town of Elk Mountain Tuesday.

Michael P. Romero and Diana B. Ray, both 36 years old, booked into the detention center for felony possession of methamphetamine and fentanyl and misdemeanor possession of psilocybin mushrooms and marijuana. Romero also had an active warrant out of New Mexico.

Romero was also charged with eluding after he fled a traffic stop for speeding in a 2005 Chrysler 300 and exited I-80 at Elk Mountain. Local ranchers tipped the highway patrol to the location of the suspect after the suspects began traveling on dirt roads toward Medicine Bow. The brief pursuit ended when the car became disabled. The two adult occupants and one juvenile were taken into custody without further incident.

The release from the Wyoming Highway Patrol did not provide a status update on the 16-year-old who was an occupant in the car. WHP thanked the Sheriff’s Department, Bureau of Land Management Rangers and the residents who helped.
