Pedro Mountain Fire evacuations to lift today

A major update from the Pedro Mountain Fire this morning: The evacuation orders and road closures that have been in place for more than a week will be lifted at 2 p.m. this afternoon.

Homeowners are urged to exercise re-entry precautions because of hazardous conditions and ongoing fire-fighting operations. Lori Iverson, the public information officer with the Incident Team, told Bigfoot 99 that unnecessary travel into the area is discouraged.

Other dangers include debris, such as wires, nails and broken glass. Another hazard is hard-to-see ash holes, left from burned out stumps and trees.

Fire crews will be in the area patrolling and removing sprinkler put in last week for structure protection. Iverson said operations are still underway but the fire is 60 percent contained.

The Pedro Mountain Fire has burned 21,463 acres. Officials say it was caused by lightning early in the afternoon on August 24.
