Hay for your horses: With drought conditions gripping much of the state, including Carbon County, the Wyoming Highway Patrol is supporting efforts to ease the impact on ranchers and others.

Commercial carriers who transport hay can obtain a Class E permit which allows hay to be stacked to a height of 15 feet. Captain Dan Wyrick with Patrol said the usual legal limit is 14 feet.

The extra height for additional loads can be achieved with trailers or flatbeds that have a lowered profile. Permits can be obtained at or through any port of entry for a fee of $15 for a single trip for $50 for extended periods up to 90 days. Permits for the bigger loads of hay need to be obtained before entering or moving through the state.
