Wyoming Football Head Coach Craig Bohl rolled the dice. With quarterback Sean Chambers plagued by turnovers and a dramatic drop in production since the start of conference play three games ago, backup Levi Williams will get the start this week. The coaching staff made the announcement in a statement yesterday.

After Saturday’s disappointing 14-3 loss to New Mexico, a team that Wyoming was favored to beat by 20 points, Chambers had the look of defeat. He admitted that being pulled from the game at the end of a scoreless first quarter was not a good feeling.

Chambers had a pretty good run to start the season, when Wyoming went 4-0 before hitting the three game slide. The 6’3″, 225 lb junior has completed only 40 percent of his passes in the past two games, and turned the ball over five times on picks or fumbles.

When asked Saturday what it’s going to take to pull out of the nosedive the Cowboys have been in for the last month, Chambers put it this way.

That guy will be Williams, who is no stranger to leading the offense. The sophomore appeared in all six games last year after Chambers went down with a season-ending injury. He passed for 877 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions. Not super-impressive, but Williams also rushed for 100 yards and a team-high six touchdowns.
Head Coach Craig Bohl is a leader at the crossroads. His team is facing adversity. The season is on the line. Changes have to be made. That means tough decisions, like taking the ball away from Chambers, the guy who has been the undeniable team leader up until now.

“Positionally” is the key word there. It was the crystal ball moment in Monday’s news conference that signaled this position change was coming. A road trip to San Jose State might not come at a good time for a beat up Cowboy team, but that is what the schedule reads. With Chambers in time-out, Williams will get most if not all of the snaps in practice this week. Saturday’s matchup is scheduled to kick at 2 o’clock. Bigfoot 99 will broadcast the pregame show beginning at 12:30 p.m.
