City of Rawlins settles in wrongful death suit
Rather than defend their case at trial, the City of Rawlins and two of its police officers have settled the wrongful death lawsuit brought by the family of an unarmed Colorado man killed during an investigation into someone selling marijuana.
Two Rawlins police officers shot and killed John Randall Veach on December 30th, 2015. Veach ignored orders to exit his vehicle, and instead tried to drive away from the scene where he was being questioned.
The attorney representing the Veach family settled out of court. The city agreed to pay $925,000. The city’s case appeared weak, with police dash cam footage and testimony from a deputy sheriff demonstrating lethal force was not needed. Emma Diercks reports.
Rawlins city council begins budget approval process
In Rawlins, this year’s budget process has been a smooth one. After wrapping up several workshops, city council plans to approve a $36.9 million budget for Fiscal Year 2019-2020 at the first of three readings next week.

Saratoga officials seeking more zoning officer applicants
The Town of Saratoga has received one application for its open zoning officer position at this time.
The Planning Commission hopes to see more interest as they would like to fill the position soon. Emma Diercks has the story.
Historic locomotives roll through Carbon County today and tomorrow
A ceremony celebrating a bygone era of railroading will kick-off in Rawlins today at noon.
The community gathering and picnic at Depot Park centers around the arrival of two historic steam engines, Big Boy and Living Legend, which are slated to arrive around 12:45 p.m.
Together, the two hefty engines stretch nearly 250-feet long. They’ve attracted enthusiastic crowds on their round trip this month from Cheyenne to Utah for the 150th anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad.
Today’s celebration in Rawlins is scheduled to last about 90 minutes. Big Boy and Living Legend will remain overnight in Rawlins. They’ll pull out tomorrow at 8 a.m. with their next stop scheduled for Hanna.
The trains will be visible in Hanna from Main and Front Streets, from 9 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. on Friday. The Big Boy and Living Legend will chug into Medicine Bow around 9:45 a.m. for a 30-minute visit there at McFadden Road. From there, the icons of railroading in the west will chug homeward to Cheyenne.
Sports: Carbon County high schools put it all on the line this weekend
It’s the final weekend of the 2019 spring sports season as the track and soccer teams will compete at their respective state events.
