Local students awarded scholarships

Four Carbon County students will head off to college this fall with extra money in their pockets. Carbon County Commissioners, keeping with a tradition spanning more than a decade, awarded $4,000 in scholarships at their regular meeting this week.

Each scholarship is valued at $1,000 and is good for one full academic year at an in-state school. Three of the scholarships went to high school seniors heading off to college this fall. Recipients are Nicholas Chavez, Mackenzie Steele and Thomas Duncan.

Each May, the board of commissioners also awards a renewal scholarship to one of the previous year’s winners. This year’s $1,000 renewal scholarship went to Perri Freeman of Hanna. Commissioners received 23 applications this year, down slightly from the 28 submitted in 2018. In 2017, the commissioners received only 18 applications.
