Crews make headway on 12,000 acre Pedro Mountain Fire
The Pedro Mountain Fire has burned 12,427 acres in northern Carbon County since Saturday, and is still burning. The latest size estimate is a 20 percent increase from Wednesday’s number.
The jump in size, officials say, has more to do with the improved accuracy of survey data from the burn area east of Pathfinder Reservoir than with significant new fire growth.
In fact, Lori Iverson with the Type 3 team said efforts earlier this week to build black lines to stall the advance of the fire to the north proved successful when winds shifted.
Night crews observed the fire running and torching in the areas known as the Chimneys and Mount Shadows. Daylight operations Thursday involved cutting dozer lines along the southern flank and conducting burnout operations to reduce fuel ahead of the active fire line.
Sprinkler systems were set up near homes. The sprinklers will be activated if the fire makes a run at the structures. Iverson said that in addition to ground crews, aircraft are using Pathfinder Reservoir to make water drops over hot spots in the burn zone.
Over 300 personal, including five hotshot crews, are now working the fire burning at the northern end of Carbon County.
No additional structures have burned since four were damaged during the big run the fire made on Sunday in the Pedro Mountain Road area. All closure and evacuation orders remain in place.
The weather forecast calls for continued dry and breezy conditions for the next several days. Iverson said crews are ready to respond to whatever happens.
The Pedro Mountain Fire is 23 percent contained.
