A new season starts today: Tax Season. The chill of paying taxes comes early this year. It will last longer, too. Filing season starts 17 days earlier than last year. You have until April 18th to file, three days longer than usual. So you can pay Uncle Sam sooner or later this year. If you have a refund coming, you may want to file sooner. IRS commissioner is saying “processing delays” could hang thing up.

“The pandemic continues to create challenges,” says IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig. The IRS offers these tips to avoid delays and speed up your refund:

1.Use e-file and direct deposit. It eliminates the middle man.
2. Collect all documents before preparing a tax return.
3. Don’t call unless you absolutely have to. Use online resources otherwise the IRS warns that you’re in for long delays.

If you’re still waiting on last year’s taxes, they have a tip for that, too. Enter $0 for last year’s Adjusted Gross Income on the 2021 tax return. If you’re already thinking about an extension, You’ll still have to pay an estimate of taxes you owe by April 18th to avoid late penalties, but then you’ll have until Monday, Oct. 17th to complete your tax return.
