The relatively rare sight of a funnel cloud looming over the Platte Valley was captured in pictures and videos by residents Thursday afternoon.

Carbon County Emergency Management Coordinator Lenny Layman issued a statement saying that a Carbon County School District Two rural bus driver reported the ominous looking funnel cloud possibly touched down near Coad Mountain around 3:30 p.m.

Emergency Management said no reports of damage had been received.

The National Weather Service is calling the finger-like, spinning cloud formation a Cold Air Funnel. If it had touched down, its top wind speeds may have been in the range of 50-60 miles, relatively weak for a tornado.

The weather service said given the latitude and longitude of the possible touchdown spot, property damage was unlikely.

Photographs and video of the dramatic weather event are posted on the Bigfoot 99 Facebook page.
