A sheriff from Maryland will take command of the Wyoming Highway Patrol in January.
Wyoming Department of Transportation Director Luke Reiner announced Thursday that Sheriff Timothy Cameron of St. Mary’s County, Maryland has been selected as the next Colonel and Administrator of the WHP.
Cameron brings over 40 years of policing experience to the Wyoming Highway Patrol, including four terms as Sheriff. His current term ends in December when he will move to Wyoming.
Cameron said he is honored by the selection and is eager to assume command. “My appreciation to Governor Gordon, Director Reiner, and all those involved in the selection process for the opportunity to live and work in Wyoming and be part of such an exemplary, storied agency.”
The selection process lasted over the last seven months and involved the Governor, the Wyoming Association of Sheriffs and Chiefs of Police, DCI, WYDOT’s senior leadership, the Wyoming Highway Patrol Association and insight from prior and currently serving Wyoming Troopers.
Lt. Colonel Shannon Ratliff has been serving as interim administrator of the WHP since May, when Col. Kebin Haller retired after more than 31 years in law enforcement. Ratliff himself came out of retirement to serve as the interim administrator. The Lt. Colonel retired in September of 2021 after serving for nine years as Operations Commander and 24 years with WYDOT.
Sheriff Cameron is a member of various stakeholder groups and associations, working on issues like the Heroin and Opioid Emergency Task Force and the Emergency Management Advisory Council, among others.
