The high-country section of WYO 70 over Battle Pass in southern Carbon County closed for the winter season on Tuesday.
The WYDOT highway crews in Saratoga and Baggs which maintain roadway decided weather forecasts and current conditions warranted closing the 23-mile section of 70 through the pass. Crews reported strong winds and blowing snow after Monday’s winter storm.
Last year, WYO 70 closed Dec. 10. In previous years, WYO 70 closed Nov. 14 in 2020, Dec. 2 in 2019, Nov. 23 in 2018. The latest the scenic stretch of highway in recent memory was December 23 in 2017.
WYO 70 between mile markers 27 and 50 will remain closed until WYDOT crews can work to clear the accumulated snow in the spring.
Wyoming 130, the Snowy Range Road, closed on November 10.
