Rawlins will be the home of a new appliance delivery depot.
An appliance distribution center, focused entirely on delivery within the county, will open in a few years. During the Rawlins City Council meeting on April 18, Councilman Chris Weisenburg motioned to authorize a special use permit for Home Express Delivery Services to operate a local distribution center.
The appliance distribution center will be located next door to the Tractor Supply Company between Mahoney and Plaza Streets.
Community Development Director Luis Lascano said the city’s existing zoning ordinances have no code governing this type of business. Lascano said the lack of a current regulation requires a special use permit be issued and approved by the city council.
Lascano said the business will take delivery of online appliance orders from Home Depot and distribute them throughout the county. The Community Development Director said he thinks the delivery center will be a great addition to the city, when it opens in 3 to 5 years.
Councilman Weisenburg told the council the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission approved the special use permit for the appliance distribution center, unanimously. The councilman stated that the traffic in the area would not increase much because of the new business. Lascano said the distribution center would work exclusively with the home improvement retailer.
City ordinance requires permission from all property owners within 300 feet of the proposed business site. Lascano said every letter he received back expressed approval of the project, with one minor stipulation. The Community Development Director said one property owner asked that the delivery trucks use the plaza’s rear entrance, off Mahoney Street.
Lascano added that the plan had already received the blessing of the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission.
Mayor Terry Weickum opened Councilman Weisenburg’s motion to a vote. The motion passed unanimously. The distribution center is three to five years away from opening its doors for business.
