A Laramie based food truck has broken two world records for selling chicken wings.
On July 29th, during Cheyenne Frontier Days, Weitzel’s Wings sold the most chicken wings in the world. The food truck company, also known as Double Dubs, has broken both the eight- and 24-hour records in a single day. Weitzel’s Wings sold 28,049 and 48,083 wings respectively.
Owner Trent Weitzel said he began preparing for the record attempt one year ago. Weitzel said he announced his intention to become world champion on July 29th, 2022, National Chicken Wing Day. The food truck owner said he spent the year researching the requirements needed to break the world records.
Weitzel used multiple trucks for the record attempt. However, the food truck owner followed the rules that required all the food to be served over a single table. Weitzel said the regulations ensure that the record was set at a single location.
Weitzel said breaking the eight-hour record was the harder of the two achievements. The previous eight-hour sales record of 23,046 wings was set in China in 2021. Weitzel said to set a new world record he needed to sell at least 3,000 wings an hour. Despite some inclement weather, the food truck owner said he broke the record by a little more than 5,000 wings.
Weitzel said he sold closer to 3,500 wings an hour. The food truck owner said that was more than enough to take home the eight-hour wing selling record.
Weitzel said the eight-hour record attempt ended at 9:00pm. The food truck owner said he continued to serve locals throughout the night. When morning arrived, Weitzel said the community came out to support him and the 24-hour record was broken as well.
Weitzel said he’s always wanted to set a world record, but didn’t know how. When he found out about the record for the most chicken wings sold, the food truck owner knew it was an achievement he could do.
Weitzel is no stranger to accolades. In September of 2022, he won the Festival Favorite award at the National Buffalo Wing Festival in Buffalo, New York. The previous year, 2021, Weitzel won Best Hot Sauce at the same competition. With the world record in hand, the food truck owner said he has his sights set on winning more awards at the National Buffalo Wing Festival next month.
Unfortunately, neither of Weitzel’s records will be featured in the Guinness Book of World Records. The food truck owner said the record management team required $25,000 to officiate the event. Weitzel said the lack of Guinness recognition doesn’t diminish his accomplishments.
Weitzel said breaking two world records in one day was not a one-person job. The food truck owner thanked his team of employees for making his dream come true.
Weitzel said he won’t rest on his laurels. The food truck owner said he intends to devise new sauces and continue offering world record breaking wings to Laramie and the surrounding areas.
