The Cowboy Football season is a little over one week away. In a sign of how confident head coach Craig Bohl is about his team, he surprised many by releasing the depth chart this week. Coach Bohl has always held the depth chart like a closely guarded secret. Last year, the team didn’t even release a depth chart ahead of the season opener.

A relaxed looking Coach Bohl said this week that last Saturday’s scrimmage has given him some confidence that he did not have at this time one year ago.

Andrew Peasley locked up the starting quarterback position early. Peasley’s backup -Evan Svoboda – is listed as three inches taller, 6 foot 5, and 27 pounds bigger at 245.

The big question over the last two weeks has been the running back position. Three are listed on the depth chart. 5-foot-8-inch Jamari Ferrell, #32, locked down the #1 spot. Jamari James, one inch smaller and 30 pounds lighter is #2. And the big man, Sam Scott, #22, from Omaha, Nebraska, is listed as the #3 man in the run game.

Coach Bohl said he was pleased with Saturday’s scrimmage, which was officiated by Mountain West officials. Bohl said having the black stripes on the field helped sharpen up players on both sides of the ball.

The depth chart includes 17 returning starters (10 on defense, five on offense and both the starting place-kicker and punter).

Including Ferrel, a junior college transfer, the seven new projected starters (six on offense and one on defense) include: veteran wide receivers Ryan Marquez and Wyatt Wieland; and three young offensive linemen in tackle Caden Barnett and offensive guards Wes King and Jack Walsh; as well as impressive sophomore cornerback Kolbey Taylor on defense.

Bohl said he released the depth chart this week because he’s facing fewer unknowns this year. The team is generally more mature and seasoned than the squad Wyoming put out on the field in the season opener last year.

The season opener against Texas Tech is one week from this Saturday. 5:30 kickoff at the War and here on Bigfoot 99.
