After last year’s successful launch to the program, roller skating will return to the Rawlins Family Recreation Center this weekend.
This Sunday, October 29th, from 3:00 to 5:00 pm, the Rawlins rec center will begin its second season of roller skating. Parks and Recreation Director Jason Sehon said regular skating sessions will take place every Friday and Sunday. Sehon said special events may cause rec center staff to cancel Friday evening skating.
The Rawlins Family Recreation Center held its first roller skating season in October of last year. The season ended in April of 2023. Sehon said hundreds of people came to the opening weekend and subsequent special events. The parks and rec director said typically, nearly 100 people would attend each skating session.
Recreation Supervisor Nikki Howell said for the 2023-24 season, she is going to focus on inviting more local businesses to sponsor a skating night. Howell said for $250, a company will receive a number of tickets to give out as they see fit. The recreation supervisor said the events were very successful last season.
Parks and Rec Director Sehon said the rec center typically has enough skates for most events. Sehon said after the opening weekend, he ordered more of the most requested skate sizes.
Also, for the 2023-24 season, Sehon said the rec center is offering private skate parties. The parks and rec director said holding a skating party is a fun and inexpensive way to celebrate your child’s birthday.
Recreation Supervisor Howell said due to limited numbers of each sized skate, parties will be limited to 20 children. Howell said skating parties cost $140 for non-recreation center members and $120 for members.
Like last year, personal skates are banned from the Rawlins Family Recreation Center. Howell said staff are trying to preserve the newly resurfaced gymnasium floor.
Howell said tickets for the Friday and Sunday skate nights are priced differently depending on if attendees are rec center members or not. The recreation supervisor explained the pricing system.
The opening of the 2023-24 roller skating season is this Sunday, October 29th, from 3:00 to 5:00 pm, at the Rawlins Family Recreation center at 1616 Harshman Street. For more information, call the Recreation Center at 324-7529.
