Come to the Carbon County Museum for a free holiday open house with crafts and hot chocolate. Santa Clause will be there as well.
This Saturday, December 16th, the Carbon County Museum is hosting its Second Annual Christmas Open House. Museum Director Tom Mensik said this weekend’s event will be bigger and better than last year.
Mensik said Saturday’s event will feature free coffee and hot chocolate, crafts, and a story time. The museum director said jolly ol’ Saint Nick will also make an appearance.
Mensik said Christmas open house attendees can participate in a variety of crafting activities, including building a wooden candy cane and decorating an ornament. The museum director said he will also raffle off three different gift baskets during Saturday’s event.
Mensik said people who bring three canned goods to donate to St. Vincent De Paul will receive one free raffle ticket.
The museum director said he pulled some strings and got Kris Kringle himself to attend next Saturday’s event. Mensik said he has a space set aside in the museum for people to take Christmas pictures.
Mensik said when the holidays are over, he will begin to make some changes at the museum. The director said he’ll start by relocating the existing display about ranching into the museum’s garage, next to the sheep wagons and saddles.
After the ranching artifacts are moved from the museum’s main room, Mensik said he’ll set up an exhibit about law enforcement. The museum director said he wants to showcase the unsung heroes who kept the public safe from Carbon County’s infamous outlaws.
Mensik said the new law enforcement exhibit will feature patches and badges donated by the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office and Rawlins Police Department. The museum director said a grizzly pair of shackles found during an excavation of the old Carbon County jail will also be on display.
Mensik said the museum’s military collection will be included in the new law enforcement exhibit as well.
The museum director said he is also working on an exhibit about transportation in Carbon County. Mensik said the display will cover history from the foundation of the Overland Trail up to the construction of Interstate 80.
Mensik said a lot of changes are in store for the Carbon County Museum in the coming year. The museum director asked visitors to be patient while the new exhibits are being constructed. Mensik said the wait will be worth it.
The Christmas Open House at the Carbon County Museum is this Saturday, December 16th, from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. Admission is free.
