The seats on the Medicine Bow town council are once again full.

From a field of three candidates, Medicine Bow resident Jerry Wohl was selected to serve. Wohl takes Sharon Kahl’s vacant seat. Citing health concerns, Kahl resigned during last month’s Medicine Bow town council meeting. Mayor Justin George declared a vacancy on the council asked for letters of interest for Kahl’s empty seat.

At Monday’s Medicine Bow town council meeting, following an executive session to consider the council appointment, Mayor George said the town received three letters of interest.

The first letter, said Mayor George, was from cattle-rancher Lucia Villarreal. In her letter of interest, Villarreal said as a property owner and parent, she would make a good addition to the town council.

The second letter of interest came from Medicine Bow Rural Health Care District Board Member Lee Cook.

In his letter of interest, Cook said he moved to Medicine Bow in 2020 and fell in love with the small town. Cook said his experience working for several successful businesses makes him an ideal candidate for the open council seat.

Long-time Medicine Bow resident Jerry Wohl submitted the third and final letter of interest. In his letter, Wohl said appointing him to the council will benefit the town.

Wohl was unanimously chosen to be the newest Medicine Bow town council member. He will fill the remainder of Sharon Kahl’s term, ending in January of 2025.

Following the council’s decision, Wohl was sworn in by Town Clerk and Treasurer Karen Heath.

Wohl took his seat on the council. In most cases, a newly appointed council member is unable to vote on town matters until they are bonded. A surety bond safeguards a municipality against financial loss due to improper or illegal acts by an elected or appointed official. Mayor George explained that Wohl can immediately vote because his seat is already bonded.

Mayor George thanked everyone who submitted a letter of interest. The mayor said local government only works if the community is involved.

Wohl joins Crystal Mayfield, Kristi Wickizer, and Trevor Strauch on the Medicine Bow town council.
