The Rawlins city council voted to allow its two high schools to hang graduation banners from light poles in the downtown shopping district.
During the May 7th Rawlins city council meeting, Councilman Chris Weisenburg motioned to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with Carbon County School District Number One to display congratulatory graduation banners on city-owned light poles.
Each banner features a picture of a graduating student with their name.
Councilman Weisenburg said the idea to hang banners of the graduating class originated during COVID. The councilman said this year’s banners have been sponsored by Rocky Mountain Power. The electric power company has also offered to put up the banners, said Councilman Weisenburg.
Both Rawlins High and Victory High School seniors will be features on the banners. The class of 2024 consists of 108 students. Ninety-nine of the students are from Rawlins High School. The remaining nine seniors are graduating from Victory High.
At last week’s city council meeting, Downtown Development Authority Mainstreet Executive Director Pam Thayer acknowledged that the MOU for the graduation banners was presented later in the year than usual. Thayer thanked City Attorney Pinita Maberry-Nave and City Clerk Lynn Shearer for making sure the agreement was brought before the council.
Thayer said she and the City Attorney considered creating a standing agreement between the city and the school district for the graduation banners. However, uncertainty over who will physically install the banners in the future eliminated the idea, said Thayer. The DDA Mainstreet Executive Director said she’ll contact the volunteer parent committee responsible for arranging the graduation banners sooner.
The Rawlins city council voted to approve the Memorandum of Understanding with Carbon County School District Number One to allow the 108 graduation banners to be displayed on the city’s lamp posts.
