This weekend, the Carbon County Museum is unveiling a new exhibit on the history of law enforcement in Carbon County.

Museum Director Tom Mensik said his facility contains a lot of information about local outlaws, specifically Big Nose George Parrott. Because of that, Mensik said he wanted to create an exhibit that focuses on the history of law enforcement in the area.

Mensik said to prepare for the law enforcement exhibit, he reached out to the Wyoming Frontier Prison and Wyoming State Penitentiary Warden Neicole Molden for information about the evolution of criminal justice in Carbon County.

As well as information about law enforcement, Mensik said the new exhibit contains dozens of seldom-seen artifacts. The museum director said a collection of badges, both new and old, will also be on display.

Mensik said the exhibit will contain wreckage from the 1955 United Flight 409 plane crash on Medicine Bow Peak. The museum director said a mysterious highly illegal firearm will also be part of the new display.

Being a sheriff or police officer in Carbon County requires a unique set of skills. Mensik said the new exhibit will highlight the differences between urban and rural law enforcement tactics.

Mensik said the exhibit also contains a first-of-its-kind memorial to all the Carbon County peace officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty. The museum director said he wanted to pay respect to every police officer, emergency medical technician, Wyoming Highway Patrol trooper, Game and Fish agent, Sheriff’s deputy, and Department of Corrections guard who have died in the line of duty.

The Carbon County Museum will unveil its new Justice and Law Enforcement in Carbon County exhibit this Saturday, June 1st.
