It’s a sign of the times: The City of Rawlins will provide less money to non-profit and ancillary organizations in the upcoming fiscal year.

Every year, non-profit and charity organizations request money from the Rawlins government. This year, 13 organizations have submitted applications totaling $216,000, including the Carbon County Economic Development Corporation, Boys and Girls Club, and Pet Partners.

During the June 4th Rawlins city council meeting, City Manager Sarvey said this year, only $200,750 will be set aside from the upcoming budget to support the non-profits.

City Manager Sarvey said the council agreed to provide 10% less money to the non-profits during earlier budget discussions. Sarvey said some of the organizations are requesting more money than the city is able to give.

Eight of the 13 non-profit organizations will receive less funding than they requested.

The Carbon County Economic Development Corporation asked the city for $15,000 this fiscal year. However, Rawlins has chosen to give them $13,500. The largest disparity is with Pet Partners of Carbon County. The animal rescue requested $15,000 from the city but is only going to receive $9,000.

Carbon County COVE is the only organization that will receive more than it asked for. The domestic violence shelter requested $12,500 this year. The organization will receive $13,500, perhaps a reflection of the hard social times in the city.

At the June 4th Rawlins city council meeting, City Manager Sarvey said in the past, the non-profit organizations would come before the council to explain their funding requests. However, Sarvey said time won’t allow for that to happen this year. The city manager said the council can ask to hear from the non-profits in the future.

Mayor Terry Weickum said that, if necessary, the council can make budget adjustments at that time.
