The City of Rawlins recognized local resident Gayle Shaw with the June Community Builder Award.

During the June 18th Rawlins city council meeting, Carbon County Senior Services Advisory Council President Gayle Shaw was honored by the city for her volunteer work.

Rawlins Volunteer Recognition Committee member Pam Thayer explained that the Community Builder Award is given to people and organizations who improve life for city residents.

Recreation Director Nikki Howell said Shaw, in her time as an elementary school teacher, went out of her way to make sure her students were taken care of. Now, as president of the Senior Services Advisory Council, Howell said Shaw works to make sure the city’s older residents are properly cared for.

Howell said in her role as Senior Services Advisory Council President, Shaw arranges different activities and events for the seniors. When not helping the elderly, Howell said Shaw can be found assisting others and participating in city organizations.

Howell said Shaw enjoys seeing the smiles of people who were reluctant to participate in her planned activities, but are now a part of the group instead of staying home alone. For those reasons, and more, the Rawlins Volunteer Recognition Committee chose to award Shaw with the June 2024 Community Builder Award.

Shaw thanked the committee for the award. The Senior Services Advisory Council President encouraged everyone to help in any way they can.

Rawlins Community Builder Award recipients receive a recognition plaque from the city and a check for $100 to be donated to a non-profit organization of their choice. Shaw opted to give her prize money to the Rawlins Senior Center.
