Wyoming Senior Senator John Barrasso made it clear Thursday that the Biden Administration’s briefing yesterday on the attempt to kill the president’s opponent in this year’s election lacked substance and seriousness.
Two briefings were held Wednesday for House and Senate members. The briefers included FBI Director Christopher Ray and Secret Service Chief Kimberly Cheatle. The meetings went longer than the planned 30 minutes, but only a few legislators were allowed to ask questions, mostly Democrats.
After the meeting, Barrasso said the “head of the secret service needs to go,” referring to former Coca Cola executive, Cheatle.
Senator Mike Lee said in a post on X: “Never — in my 13 years in the Senate — have I seen a briefing end after answering only four questions. Biden officials took four questions. Three of the questions were from Democrats, Senator Lee said.
Representative Randy Weber of Texas described the briefing as “awful” with out enough time for questions from lawmakers who will investigate the assassination attempt.
Politico reports that Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle acknowledged during the interview that there were “gaffes” and a “failure” on the day of the rally.
Senator Barrasso was frank about Cheatle’s failures and performance yesterday. “No one has taken responsibility. No one has been held responsible. Someone has died. The President was almost killed.” Senator Barrasso was clear, after the briefing, that Cheatle needs to be terminated as the head of the Secret Service.
The Department of Homeland Security is not cooperating with the request to fire Cheatle. DHS, headed by Alejandro Mayorkas, notified Oversight Chair James Comer (R-Ky.) on Wednesday that Cheatle will not appear before his committee on Monday, after a subpoena was issued for her appearance earlier Wednesday.
Meanwhile, former President Trump will deliver his first speech tonight following the failed assassination attempt.
