The City of Rawlins recognized the local Lions Club chapter for its volunteer service.
Every month, the Rawlins Volunteer Committee celebrates a person or organization who work to make the city a better place for all residents. Parks and Recreation Director Nikki Howell presented the July Community Builder Award to the Rawlins Lions Club.
The Lions Club’s mission statement is to empower volunteers to serve their communities, meet humanitarian needs, encourage peace and promote international understanding.
Rawlins Public Information Officer Mira Miller said the Lions Club contributes to the city in three ways: sight, community spaces, and youth. Miller said the 103-year-old organization collects donated eyeglasses and pays for cataract surgery for residents. The Lions Club also supports a summer camp for blind youth.
Miller said the Rawlins Lions Club helps maintain the city’s public parks. The volunteer organization also fundraises for community and national causes. Miller also said the Lions Club provides the city’s students with scholarships to continue their education.
Miller said the Lions Club uses community events to raise money, such as a pancake breakfast during the Carbon County Fair.
Community Builder Award recipients receive a recognition plaque and $100 to donate to a nonprofit organization of their choice. Rawlins Lion Club President Vic Wilkerson chose to give the award money to the Rawlins Highschool Booster Club.
