The winless Wyoming Cowboys fell to 0-and-3 on the season Saturday night after a 34-14 loss to BYU inside War Memorial Stadium.
The Cougars dominated Wyoming from the start. Their first touchdown came early, 5:58 in the first quarter. Three minutes later at 9:16, BYU went up 14-0.
BYU came to play and racked up 458 yards of total offense compared to Wyoming’s 217. On the night, Cougar quarterback Jake Retzlaff threw for 291 yards, completing 22 of 36 passes.
BYU put up 140 net yards rushing on 28 carries. Wyoming rushed for 77 net yards with quarterback Evan Svoboda gaining more than 30 of them.
Wyoming’s first touchdown came at the 5:11 mark of the second quarter. At the end of an 11-play drive, Svoboda scored his first rushing touchdown of the year to get the Cowboys on the board.
The crowd and the Wyoming sideline were fired up.
As the teams took the field for the second half, Wyoming color announcer Kevin McKinney remarked that “feels good to be home.” No sooner were the words spoken when the BYU’s Keelan Marion took the opening kickoff and ran it 100 yards for a touchdown to open the second half.
The Cougars kickoff return and touchdown popped any hope Wyoming might have had for a second-half comeback. The Cougars went up by 17-points and the Wyoming offense would not score again until late in the fourth quarter. After the game, Cowboy Head Coach Jay Sawvel put it this way.
At around the 7-minute mark in the fourth quarter, Svoboda rushed for a one-yard touchdown on shotgun play to make the final score 34-14. The Cowboys are now 30-47-3 all-time against the Cougars.
Wyoming is off to UW’s worst season start since 2015 when they went 0-and-6.
After two losses at home, the Cowboys will now get ready for a road game in the Lone Star State this week. Wyoming will be in Lubbock to face North Texas on Saturday. Mean Green is off to a 2-1 start to the season after losing to Texas Tech 66-21 on Saturday.
