The Rawlins Downtown Development Authority is preparing to install an exhibit that honors Carbon County veterans.
During Tuesday’s Rawlins city council meeting, Downtown Development Authority Mainstreet Director Pam Thayer explained that her volunteer design committee came up with an idea for Veteran’s Day. Thayer said they are planning to install a Veteran’s Day exhibit in the Hugus Ferguson building on Cedar Street.
In 2022, the Board of Carbon County Commissioners gifted the 150-year-old Ferguson building to the Rawlins Downtown Development Authority.
At this week’s meeting, Thayer said she is working with the Rotary Club, American Legion, and Lions Club to put on a Veteran’s Day exhibit for the entire month of November. The DDA Mainstreet Director explained that the exhibit will feature pictures and information about local veterans.
Thayer said that Rawlins DDA Mainstreet is working with Bank of Commerce on a video showcasing the same veterans featured in the Ferguson building exhibit. Thayer said the video will play in various locations, including online.
Since this is their first time attempting this type of event, Thayer said she was hoping to feature at least 25 veterans in the exhibit. With a month left to go, the DDA Mainstreet director said 22 veterans’ profiles have already been submitted for display.
Thayer said other organizations in the city are planning their own Veterans Day celebrations. She said the Rawlins Middle and High School band and choir are holding a concert and the local Elks Lodge is likely to host a luncheon for veterans.
To submit a veteran’s picture and profile for the exhibit, first download an application form from the Rawlins Downtown Development Authority website, www.downtownrawlins.org. After filling out the authorization form, call DDA Mainstreet member Marcella Redmond at 321-5201 to submit your application. The organization will scan your veteran’s picture and return the original to you.
All applications must be received by Friday, October 18th.
Thayer is also asking for volunteers to help set up the exhibit on November 1st and 2nd.
