San Diego State Head Football Coach Sean Lewis is getting the Red and Black ready for the trip to Laramie to take on Wyoming Saturday in the War.

Last week, the Aztecs came from behind in the fourth quarter to earn a three-point, 27-24 win against Hawaii at Snapdragon Stadium to open Mountain West Play. It was their second win of the season after going all of September without a win.

The Aztecs opened the season at home on August 31st with a 45-14 win over Texas A&M-Commerce. San Diego State dropped the next three, losing to Oregon State, Cal and Central Michigan.

Coach Lewis said the Aztecs showed up this week with a good mind set as they get ready to head out on the road for a rivalry game against Wyoming.

The Aztecs enjoyed their bye week on September 21st before losing at Central Michigan by one point on a last second field goal.

Looking to this Saturday, Coach Lewis sized up Wyoming this way.

Like Wyoming’s Jay Sawvel in Laramie, Coach Lewis is in his first year as Head Coach at San Diego State.  He served as offensive coordinator at the University of Colorado Boulder in 2023 and the head football coach at Kent State University from 2018 to 2022. Lewis played college football at the University of Wisconsin–Madison.

Coach Lewis said Wyoming’s win over Air Force last week resembles what has been happening with the Aztecs. Wyoming, Lewis said, the Cowboys—like Aztecs–needed September to figure out their strengths and weakness at key positions as they battled early season injuries. Lewis said Wyoming played cohesively and generated explosive plays against Air Force—elements that were missing in the first month of the Cowboy season.

Coach Lewis summed up Wyoming quarterback Evan Svoboda this way.

Lewis brushed off questions about the Laramie altitude being a factor.

The all-time series between Wyoming and SDSU is tied 19-19 with the Aztecs winning the last two meetings – 26-22 in 2019 and 27-24 in the 2016 Mountain West championship game.

The Cowboys won the regular season meeting in 2016, 34-33, at War Memorial Stadium. This could very well be end of the road between the two schools for the foreseeable future. San Diego State announced that it will defect the Mountain West and join the PAC-12 before the 2026 season.

The Cowboys head into Saturday’s matchup after coming off a much-needed bye week after demolishing Air Force.

Bigfoot 99 will have the radio broadcast beginning with the pregame show starting at noon.
