The Wyoming Cowboys are headed out on the road for their first conference game of the season away from Laramie tomorrow.

Wyoming will face the Spartans of San Jose State in a matinee performance on homecoming day in northern California city known as the “Capital of Silicon Valley.”

The Spartans are football geeks who malfunctioned in Fort Collins last week in a 31-24 loss. San Jose State allowed the Rams to make too many big plays.

The 1-and-5 Cowboys are trying to break out of the funk of injuries and underperformance that has dragged them down through the first half of the season. Last week, Wyoming could not hang onto a fourth quarter lead against San Diego falling by three points, 27-24. It was the second game this season that Wyoming scored more than 20 points. The first time was the end of September in the win over Air Force, 31-19.

The Wyoming defense has been banged up this year. They’ll be put to the test tomorrow against – not the two quarterbacks, who are carbon copies of each other, but the once-in-a-generation San Jose State receiver, Nick Nash.

The 6′-3″ receiver is averaging 13 yards per catch on 62 receptions this season. Nash has racked up 806 receiving yards at the halfway mark of the season.

Containing Nash is Job #1 for the Cowboys tomorrow. Head coach Jay Sawvel talked this week about the challenge Nash presents.

Coach Sawvel said the Spartans represent a big challenge, especially on the road. What’s bothering the Cowboys may be as much mental as it is some of the physical injuries Wyoming has had to overcome, as well. Sawvel put it this way.

Sawvel said the Wyoming offense will have to be efficient and effective offensively. Leaving plays on the field and turning the ball over on downs has hurt Wyoming this year. The head coach compared it to basketball.

The Cowboys will try to make it work tomorrow and improve their standings in conference play.

Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. Pregame show on Bigfoot 99 beginning at 12:30.
