The Carbon County Sheriff’s Office warns residents about a fake warrant scam.

Last week, Sherrif Alex Bakken issued a community alert about fake warrants. Sheriff Bakken wrote that an unspecified number of Carbon County residents were receiving calls or texts from local numbers stating that they had an outstanding warrant issued by the Wyoming district court. A picture of the fake warrant would then be texted to the potential victim and the scammer would demand money.

Sheriff Bakken provided a picture of one of the fake warrants and pointed out signs that prove the document is fraudulent, such as a made-up case number, incorrect wording, and grammatical errors.

Sheriff Bakken wrote that his deputies will never text people a picture of the warrant. The document will always be served in-person. Additionally, deputies will never demand payment over the phone or via email.

Sherriff Bakken reiterated that the fake warrants are a scam. The sheriff advised residents not to pay or even engage with the callers. The sheriff’s department will never call and ask for money over the phone. If you have a warrant, deputies will simply arrest you, not call and ask for a payment.
The sheriff suggested visiting the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office, located at 1302 Daley Street in Rawlins, or calling 324-2776 if you suspect you may have a warrant.
