Work on the Hanna town hall roof is expected to begin next week.
In September, the governing body in Hanna agreed to pay $115,948 in impact assistance funds to have a peaked roof installed on the town hall building. The 44-year-old structure is on its second flat roof, which leaks in several locations.
During a special meeting called by the Hanna town council on August 29th, the governing body discussed the state of the town hall roof. Mayor Jayson Nordquist explained that under ideal circumstances, a flat roof will last a maximum of 20 years before needing to be replaced.
Pete’s Builders Commercial and Residential Roofing in Cheyenne quoted the town $39,000 for a replacement flat roof. Mayor Nordquist said a peaked roof can last roughly three times as long as a flat roof and was worth the higher price tag. The mayor recommended taking the nearly $116,000 peaked roof bid from Highland Roofing instead.
In the end, the governing body voted to accept the quote from Highland Roofing.
Fast forward to Tuesday’s Hanna town council meeting. Mayor Nordquist said Highland Roofing is asking to add an additional $39,399 to the cost of the town hall roof replacement project. The mayor explained that a representative from the roofing company discovered the original town hall roof was still in place beneath the newer roof. The increased cost would have Highland Roofing remove the old material before installing the peaked roof. However, Mayor Nordquist said that removing the old roof isn’t necessary.
Mayor Nordquist said for an additional $39,399 on top of the quoted price of $115,948, Highland Roofing will restore the top of the town hall to its original condition before installing the new peaked roof. The mayor recommended denying the extra cost.
Councilman Bill Dys asked if they should postpone a vote until Highland Roofing can confirm that the town hall building does not need additional repairs before the peaked roof can be installed. Mayor Nordquist clarified that the quote only covers the removal of the old flat roof. If further issues are discovered by the roofing company, a new quote for those repairs will be submitted.
The council was simply discussing the Highland Roofing estimate, and no vote was needed.
Mayor Nordquist said the roofing company has already ordered the parts for the job and is waiting for delivery. Work is expected to begin Wednesday, November 20th.
