The Board of Carbon County commissioners selected a new chairman and vice chair for the upcoming year at their first meeting of the new year on Tuesday.

Former County Clerk Gwynn Bartlett, who was elected in November, took her place on the board beside Commissioners Travis Moore, John Johnson, Sue Jones and John Espy.

The first item on the agenda was to elect a chair and vice chair. The chairman of the board of commissioners is responsible for signing county documents and running the meetings. Last year, Jones served as the board chairman with Moore acting as vice chair.

At Tuesday’s Board of Carbon Couty Commissioners meeting, Commissioner John Espy moved to nominate Moore as the new chairman. Commissioner Johnson seconded the motion, which passed unanimously.

Commissioner Moore had previously served as the vice chairman. With his appointment as chairman, a new vice chair was needed.

During yesterday’s meeting, Commission Chairman Moore asked for a vote to appoint a new vice chair. Commissioner Johnson moved to select Gwynn Bartlett. The motion was seconded, and Commissioner Bartlett was elected.

Vice Chairwoman Bartlett’s election to the board of commissioners required her to resign her position as county clerk. Deputy Clerk Lisa Smith is serving as interim county clerk until the board selects Bartlett’s replacement.

During Tuesday’s meeting, Interim Clerk Smith asked the board to sign a letter formally asking the Carbon County Republican Party to submit nominations to fill the clerk’s position.

The board voted to have Chairman Moore sign the letter to the Carbon County Republican Party asking them to begin collecting county clerk nominations.

Republican Party Chairman Paul Metevier has already begun seeking applications from people interested in serving as county clerk. Applicants must have been a registered Republican before December 1st and complete a nomination packet, found on the Carbon County Republican Party website. Applicants must return their completed nomination packets by noon on Sunday, January 12th.

The Carbon County Republican Party has scheduled a special county clerk nomination meeting at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 18th, in the Platte Valley Community Center in Saratoga. At that time, party members will vote for three nominees to send to the Board of Carbon County Commissioners. The board will then select one of the nominees to fill the vacant county clerk position until the next election cycle.
