The Rawlins city council this week welcomed two new members and elected a mayor and vice mayor to serve for the next three years.

During Tuesday’s Rawlins city council meeting, City Attorney Pinita Maberry-Nave administered the oath of office to three council members. Councilman Darril Garner was reelected as the Ward Two representative. Newcomers Derek Elliott and Terry Patterson have taken the place of former Mayor Terry Weickum and Councilman Chris Weisenburg, respectively.

Councilman Patterson will represent Ward Three, taking the place of Chris Weisenburg, who lost reelection in November. Earlier in the meeting, Councilman Weisenburg thanked his fellow council members and the city staff for working to improve the city over the past four years.

Outgoing Mayor Terry Weickum thanked the council and city staff for their support. Weickum, who chose not to run for reelection, expressed his pride in serving alongside the dedicated employees of the city.

Councilman Derek Elliott was elected to represent Ward One in place of Weickum.

After the new council members were sworn in, the governing body adjourned into executive session. After reconvening the meeting, the council held a vote to select a new mayor. After collecting the secret ballots, City Clerk Lynn Shearer announced that Councilwoman Jacquelin Wells will serve as the next mayor of Rawlins until January of 2028.

The first order of business for Mayor Wells was to elect a new vice mayor. After another round of secret ballots, Clerk Shearer announced that Councilman Darril Garner was chosen to serve as vice mayor.

Ward Two representative Garner will serve as vice mayor until January 2028.
