The second-seed Cowgirls’ dreams were dashed in a 72-68 triple-overtime loss to Number 4 San Diego State in Las Vegas Wednesday night.

Malena Pederson fouled out late in the third overtime period with a team-high 19 points. Mountain West player of the year Allyson Fertig finished with 17 points and 18 rebounds.

As time ran out, the Cowgirls had one final look to tie it up near the end of the third OT.

David Settle had the call as the Aztecs, who lost last year’s Mountain West championship game to UNLV, used the handful of seconds remaining to pull out the win last night over Wyoming. The baseline pass Emily Dickerson in the corner for a three-point shot was too high and went off her hand.

The Cowgirls’ 25-turnovers on the night contributed to their undoing.

The Aztecs outscored the Cowgirls 8-to-4 in the third overtime period in a game that featured 16 lead changes and 12 ties. Wyoming never led in any of the three overtime periods.

The two teams were hot coming into the matchup. Wyoming had won six in a row, the Aztecs seven straight.

Malene Pedersen, the junior from Denmark, was Wyoming’s top scorer last night with 19, including two clutch buckets in the overtime periods.

The Cowgirls swept the regular season series with SDSU, but the third time was the charm for the Aztecs. The Cowgirls lost in the Mountain West Tournament championship game for the second time in the last three seasons.

Wyoming will play on in the post-season, we just don’t know when or where yet.
