The Wyoming Cowboys fell behind San Jose State early in the opening round of the Mountain West tournament Thursday afternoon. Despite a valiant effort to pull within three points late, the Pokes fell 66 to 61.
Poor shooting played a role in the opening round loss. The Cowboys shot 9 of 27 and 0-for-8 from three-point range in the first half. Wyoming’s shooting percentages improved in the second half, but not enough to overcome the early onslaught the Spartans mounted.
The missed three’s spelled doom and crippled a late push.
The officiating did not help Wyoming’s effort, either.
Keith Kelly and Kevin McKinney watched with disbelief from their courtside broadcast perch as the Spartans solidified their lead from the line.
Senior Jordan Nesbitt led a valiant comeback effort in the second half, scoring 14 of his 16 points down the stretch.
Obi Agbim finished his career at Wyoming with 12 points, fouling out after missing a potential game-tying three point shot with four seconds remaining on the clock after a valiant Wyoming comeback.
Assistant Coach Nick Reynolds summed up Wyoming’s furious comeback effort this way.
UW still leads the all-time series against San Jose State 22-6.
The Spartans advance to play No. 1 New Mexico in the quarterfinal round at the tournament this afternoon.
