The wait is over. The curtain comes up on the Wyoming football season today in Laramie. Fall camp opens today for the Brown-and-Gold.
Second-year head coach Jay Sawvel added 47 players, in the offseason, who will join the veterans that return on both offense and defense.
Leading the roster of veterans returning to the field this year is quarterback Kaden Anderson, All Mountain-West tight end John Michael Gyllenborg and wide receiver Jaylen Sargent. Also returning in the veteran corps are running back Sam Scott, receiver Chris Durr, Junior and offensive lineman Jack Walsh.
New to Laramie are three incoming coaches, Former Cowboy wide receiver and UW Hall of Famer Jovon Bouknight. After serving as an analyst last year, Bouknight takes over the wide receiver’s group. Deonte Gibson comes to UW from Air Force to coach the defensive tackles. Gary Harrell comes to Wyoming to coach running backs after spending time at Colorado.
The competition in camp will be fierce in the backfield. The two cornerback positions, two safeties, and nickel back spot are all open. The Cowboys were vulnerable at the cornerback position last year because of injuries.
Sam Scott returns as the leading rusher, although he was out during Spring camp. Two red-shirt freshmen and a transfer from Charlotte will compete against other transfers who came in during the summer. In all, Wyoming will start the season with 10 running backs on the roster.
The season opener is set for August 28 on the road against Akron, Ohio.
