In Laramie, the Wyoming Cowboys are a bigger football team at the start of fall camp than they were last year.

And faster.

Head coach Jay Savell noted the change last week. “We are a much bigger football team at numerous positions,” Sawvel said on Wednesday. “By all the metrics of what we measure, we are a substantially faster football team than what we were a year ago.”

Fans should see the improvements by the end of month. The season opens at the University of Akron on Thursday night, August 28th.

Those who are paid to watch and report on the Cowboys, like Cody Tucker at 7220 Sports.com, say that quarterback Kaden Anderson has been sharp in camp. Anderson opened camp “dropping passes between the linebackers and safeties and has been connecting on long balls. He’s the leader.”

A battle for backup quarterback has been shaping up between Ladon Sim and Gage Brook. Sims, a 6-3 sophomore from Evergreen, Alabama, played East Central Community College in Mississippi. He threw for 1,760 yards and completed just 60 percent of his passes.

Brook hails from Fort Collins where he was a standout at Rocky Mountain High School. His senior year was interrupted by a broken ankle in the second game of the season but he came back in the postseason to lead his team to an upset win in the first round of the 2022 Class 5 A State Playoffs. The Lobos season came to end with a loss in round 2.

Another battle is shaping up in the Wyoming kicking game. Erik Sanvik and Cheyenne native Keelan Anderson are the top contenders. They haven’t faced a live rush yet, though. That changes in Week 2, which begins today with the season opener three weeks from this Thursday.
