In sports, Jovon Bouknight has gone full circle.
One of the top wide receivers in Wyoming Cowboy football history, Bouknight earned first-team All Mountain West honors in 2005 after hauling in 1,116 yards through the air. Last fall, Bouknight joined the UW Hall of Fame.
After last season, working as an analyst for the Cowboys and helping in the wide receivers’ room, Bouknight was named wide receivers coach in January.
Head football coach Jay Sawvel describes Bouknight as an “outstanding coach” who “communicates well with players, is an excellent teacher, and has great experience.”
Bouknight came to Wyoming from Marshall. He also coached at Kentucky, Oregon, Texas Tech and Utah State and spent time as a graduate assistant at Wyoming.
The 2024 Cowboy receiving corps was disappointing. The Cowboys had gone as one of the worst passing attacks in the nation last year. Mike Grant was relieved of his duties as wide receivers coach at the end of last season. Bouknight was elevated to the spot.
Fans can expect big improvements in the receiving corps this year. Sports reporter Anthony Dion at the Casper Star Tribune, who keeps tabs on practices in Laramie, says attitudes are high.
His exact words: “Where there was once in-fighting, there is now camaraderie. Where there was immaturity and selfishness, there is a selfless approach. Where the attention to details appeared nonexistent and fundamentals floundered, there is now a push for exactness.”
During Media Days in July head coach Sawvel said he expects dramatically improved playmaking skills in the Wyoming wide receiver group this year.
The receiving group is led by Chris Durr, Junior from Chicago, and senior Jaylen Sargent from Logan, Utah.
The Cowboys were inside the War on Thursday where they ground through a 125-play scrimmage. Sawvel was guarded in his comments, saying that players need to hit a surge over the next week to secure positions ahead of the season opener on Thursday night, August 28th at Akron.
