Fans of the Wyoming Cowboys will have a chance to watch the football team Thursday night in Laramie.

Head Coach Jay Sawvel announced on Friday that the Pokes will host a Community Night on Thursday with an open practice.

The event is free and open to the public. Gate 4 on the east side of the stadium will open at 7 p.m. Fans will be allowed to sit in the lower east side of the stadium due to the construction inside War Memorial Stadium.

The practice will be held two full weeks before Wyoming’s first game of the season scheduled for August 28th against the University of Akron.

A year ago, the Akron Zips opened the season with a 52-6 loss to Ohio State Buckeyes. CBS broadcasters Brad Nessler and Gary Danielson dished out plenty of compliments to the Zips in the loss. The pair were especially complimentary to linebacker Bryan McCoy who had his hands full against the Buckeyes. McCoy, who is back this year, was named to various post-season honors.

The Zips finished last season with a 4-8 record after going 2-10 in 2023.

Wyoming went 3-9 last year under first-year head coach Sawvel. The previous year, during the finale under Craig Bohl, the Cowboys went 9-4, finishing the season with a 16-15 win over another team from Ohio, Toledo, at the Arizona Bowl.

This year’s team is shaping up in Laramie. Obvious starters include center Jack Walsh and right guard Caden Barnett. Tight end John Michael Gyllenborg, who was included on the preseason Mackey Award watch list released Friday.

Quarterback Kaden Anderson reportedly looked sharp, connecting on passes to Gyllenborg, Chris Durr, Jr., and Jaylen Sargent.

To get the Cowboys prepared to play in front of a crowd, Sawvel will open up Thursday night’s scrimmage of fall camp for free to the public.
