The Saratoga governing body is requiring the Police Department to consult a local dealer before selling surplus equipment.
During the September 2nd Saratoga Town Council meeting, Police Chief John Moore announced that he is working to dispose of surplus firearms. Chief Moore said he met with Rick Crays, owner of Rock Solid SST, a Rock Springs-based law enforcement equipment provider, who offered $2,810 in trade-in credit for the unneeded guns.
Chief Moore added that Crays will allow Saratoga Police officers to buy back the firearms at a $95 mark-up to recoup his time and expenses. The Police Chief said the $2,810 trade-in credit will be used to purchase additional gear for his department.
Since the firearms will be traded, not sold, Chief Moore explained that Town Attorney Kylie Waldrip said additional quotes aren’t needed and asked the governing body to approve the deal with Rock Solid SST.
Mayor Chuck Davis told Chief Moore to offer the surplus guns to the local firearms dealer, Koyoty Outdoor Sports. Mayor Davis said the business owner might offer only slightly more than Rock Solid or may not provide store credit at all, but the Chief of Police should still consult him first.
The Saratoga Town Council agreed that Chief Moore should consult with Koyoty Sports before accepting Rock Solid SST’s trade-in offer. Chief Moore said he will bring Koyoty’s offer to the September 16th Town Council meeting.
