The Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation announced on Wednesday that the suspected bomb discovered outside the Wyoming State Capitol building is likely a “deconstructed live firework munition with a fuse.”
The unexploded device was found on the Great Seal which is located inside a chain fence on the concrete courtyard at the foot of the steps into the Capitol Building.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation is now involved in the case.
According to a news release from DCI Commander Ryan Cox, “The suspicious object has been rendered safe and analyzed by the Joint Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.”
Video evidence from the scene shows two subjects of interest who are now the subject of the investigation.
Authorities have not provided the footage. Nor have they put forward any names or characteristics that would help identify the suspects.
A pedestrian discovered the explosive device Monday morning near the start of the business day.
The individual took the object into the Capitol, where Wyoming Highway Patrol (WHP) troopers were alerted, according to a news release. The neighboring Herschler Building was placed on a shelter-in-place status as people were evacuated from the Capitol and the building remained closed Tuesday. The building is now considered safe, according to law enforcement agencies.
The Capitol returned to normal business hours on Wednesday.
Information is still being sought in connection with this incident, WHP said in a release. Anyone with information, images or recordings of suspicious activity in the early morning hours of Oct. 21 is asked to contact DCI by heading to the agency’s website, wyomingdci.wyo.gov, and clicking the dedicated Capitol incident link on the main page.
