The Cowboys started hot Saturday night but fizzled by halftime in a 24-7 loss to San Diego State.
Wyoming drove down the field on the opening drive for a rushing touchdown before the five-minute mark.
Wyoming’s only touchdown came early in the first quarter. Wyoming drove down the field on a nine-play 75-yard drive against one of the top defenses in the country.
Keith Kelly had the call on the Cowboys Radio Network. Simms came in early in the first quarter and set up Wyoming’s only touchdown of the day with a 37-yard run. Erik Sandvik, the sophomore kicker from Steamboat Springs, Colorado, added the extra point.
After the score, Anderson came back into the game and remained behind center for the rest of the game. Simms was injured in the first half and did not return to the game.
An interception by the Aztecs set up their first score of the game in the closing minutes of the first quarter to tie up the game at 7-7. Another turnover by the Cowboys ended up with an Aztec field goal for a 10-7 contest with 10:52 left in the opening frame.
Wyoming threatened to score again in the fourth quarter but did not put any more points on the scoreboard. Aztecs running back, Lucky Sutton, found a hole in the Wyoming defense and cashed in with a 50-yard touchdown. The Aztecs beat the Cowboys in a homecoming game 24-7.
The 4-5 Cowboys, 2-and-3 in conference play, made too many mistakes to win the game. That was the view of Head Coach Jay Sawvel during the postgame interview.
Wyoming backup quarterback Simms was on crutches when he hobbled back to the sideline in the second half wearing a full brace. It looked like a knee injury. We’ll know more about the extent of the injury to Simms today.
The Cowboys will enjoy a bye this week before returning to action at Fresno State on November 15.
