Rawlins has hired a new finance director to manage the city’s budget.

During the October 21st Rawlins City Council Meeting, Interim City Manager Matthew Hall announced that he hired Laura Malone, former Chief Financial Officer for the Laramie County Department of Health, as the city’s new finance director.

Rawlins has been without a finance director since July of 2023, when Tom Sarvey, who was serving as Interim City Manager and Finance Director, was appointed to the permanent City Manager position.

Laura Malone assumed the role as finance director on Monday, November 3rd. Speaking to Bigfoot99, Malone said she has more than a decade of experience in the financial field.

Originally from Minneapolis, Minnesota, Malone said she has lived in Denver, Greeley, Chugwater, and, most recently, Cheyenne. With their children out of the house, she and her husband began looking to relocate to a smaller community.

After exploring job opportunities across the state, Malone said the finance director position in Rawlins aligned with her goals.

Now living in Rawlins, Malone said the first thing she will tackle as the city’s new finance director is the budget. Once that’s in place, Malone said she plans to change how things are done to better reflect her hands-on working style.

Malone said an effective finance director must identify the unique priorities of the community and then work to secure funding for those projects, including through state and federal grants.

In a written statement from the city, Malone stated that “Clear financial information empowers intelligent decision-making and helps ensure everyone involved can move forward with confidence.”
