The Town of Saratoga is preparing to enter negotiations with a telecommunications provider to install a new antenna on Town Hall.
During the November 5th Saratoga Town Council meeting, Mayor Chuck Davis announced he is in discussions with Mountain West Technologies to install new equipment on the roof of Town Hall. However, Mayor Davis said the existing tower is of unknown age and not suitable to support the planned upgrades.
In fact, Mayor Davis said a Carbon Power and Light employee told him the tower may be original to the building, making it nearly 70 years old.
The Mayor said Mountain West Technologies expressed concern that the Town Hall tower may not be properly secured to the roof, making it vulnerable to collapse.
Additionally, Mayor Davis said former Saratoga Police Officer Tyler Christian secured a grant to purchase improved communications equipment that would need to be installed on the tower.
In summary, Mayor Davis said Mountain West Technologies will not agree to use the existing Town Hall tower. Company representatives are expected to attend the November 19th Saratoga Town Council meeting to present a draft agreement for a new antenna to the governing body.
Mayor Davis said Mountain West quoted $30,000 to $40,000 for a new communications tower. Because the antenna is so important to the town, the mayor said the governing body should at least consider the proposal.
Mountain West Technologies Chief of Operations Lesha Thorvaldson explained that the company is worried that the aging tower is unsafe. Thorvaldson said that concern prompted the proposed collaborative agreement for a new communications antenna.
Mayor Davis explained that the proposed tower location hasn’t been finalized, but that it will be located on the Town Hall grounds. The mayor reiterated that the existing antenna is outdated and unsafe.
The Saratoga Town Council agreed to consider the proposed agreement with Mountain West Technologies to construct a new communications tower at Town Hall during its November 19th meeting.
