A phony bomb threat led law enforcement to evacuate the Rawlins Walmart.
Around 10:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 30th, the Rawlins Police Department received a call from an unidentified person who said they had placed three explosive devices inside the Rawlins Walmart, located at 2390 East Cedar Street.
Officers from the Rawlins Police Department, Carbon County Sheriff’s Office, and Wyoming Highway Patrol evacuated the Walmart. Rawlins Police Chief Mike Ward said officers thoroughly searched the store, including the restroom area, which the caller had specifically mentioned as containing an explosive device. After finding nothing, Chief Ward said Walmart management allowed employees to return to work.
Chief Ward said the caller claimed the bombs would go off in 30 minutes. Officers began their search after the time limit passed.
Chief Ward said bomb sniffing dogs were not used to clear the store. The Rawlins Police Chief said the nearest K9 handlers were too far away to be of any assistance.
Chief Ward explained that the bomb scare came from a blocked telephone number, most likely outside the area. The chief added that the caller used a voice‑modifying device of some sort to conceal their identity, leaving officers with little information about the suspect.
Chief Ward said during the incident, responding officers monitored witnesses, watching for anyone acting suspicious. However, no suspect has been identified at this time.
Despite the lack of evidence, Chief Ward said all information from the incident will be forwarded to the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation for further analysis.
