As colder weather sets in, the City of Rawlins is reminding residents of its snow removal procedures.

During the November 18th Rawlins City Council meeting, Public Works Director Cody Dill reviewed the city’s snow removal plan. Dill explained that the city is divided into four priority zones. During a snow event, Dill said public works crews will focus on reopening the main thoroughfares first, including East Cedar Street, North Higley Boulevard, and Spruce Street. Neighborhoods will be cleared afterwards.

According to a city‑provided flyer, Priority One areas consist of emergency routes and the largest roads, which will be plowed and sanded first. Priority Two roads follow Priority One areas, including primary connectors such as Murray Street and Inverness Boulevard. Priority Three streets, which provide access into neighborhoods, will then be cleared. Finally, Priority Four areas, consisting of smaller neighborhood roads, will not be plowed unless heavy drifting creates safety concerns. The snow removal plan was designed to ensure that most residents are never more than a few blocks from a plowed street.

Back at the November 18th City Council meeting, Public Works Director Dill explained that during a severe snowstorm, City Hall can be converted into an incident command center, enabling plow trucks to escort first responders to emergency locations.

Dill urged motorists to keep their distance from plow trucks as they clear the city’s streets. The public works director reminded residents that sidewalks and driveways are their responsibility, while snow removal crews will take care of the rest.
